Randall Pond Nature Trail is one of the “off the beaten path” places. I would dare say that many - if not a majority - of the Long Island residents do not know it exists.
While walking along this trail, it is so easy to forget the hustle and bustle of our every day lives and just relax and explore. Even though the highway is a stone’s throw from this beautiful pond, you can lose yourself in the beauty that nature offers us.
So next time you are in the area, check out this little forgotten piece of paradise located in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York.
I have selected fifteen of the 137 pictures I took from from exploration to share with you.
- Beauty Hidden on Busy Long Island
- A beautiful pale blue dragonfly allows me to take her picture.
- Not sure if this is a moth or butterfly. Guess I need to do some research.
- The incredibly tiny flowers had a lot of detail in them.
- Just look at the reflections cast from this bridge! Unreal.
- Another shot to show the wonderful reflections.
- The trail through the woods
- Another shot of the trail
- More reflections in the pond
- A picture of most of Randall Pond
- I was amazed at all the reflections because the water was not clear at all.
- Another Dragonfly
- Another shot of Randall Pond
- This was not the first bird to scold me as I walked through the woods. She was just the only one to hold still long enough for me to get a good picture.
- Half of this picture is a reflection. Can you tell where the shoreline starts?
- A beautiful sight not soon forgotten.

This is a perfect place! I’m packing my bags. Have you thought of visiting with the people from National Geographics? What beautiful photos - glorious beauty in the midst of city cahos . .

Alright everyone. I did a little research. On the third picture in the top row, I questioned whether it was a moth or a butterfly. A butterfly has ‘clubs’ at the end of their antennas - while moths are feathery. Our pictured friend has clubs I discovered when I looked at the full-size shot. In addition, moths are generally active during the night - butterflies during the day.
I think we can safely say that she is a butterfly. What do you think?
