In November, before I ever decided to seriously chase after a writing career, I joined the Dorrance Book Review Team. Dorrance Publishing, Inc. was established in 1920 to help new and unknown authors get published and is the oldest independent vanity press in America. Many authors have gotten their start with Dorrance. The most well-known of these is A.R. Ammons who was awarded the 1972 national Book Award. It is a subsidy publishing firm which means that the authors pay an amount set by Dorrance for the initial publishing run.
Although this is an unpaid job, I do get wonderful free books from writing a review. In most cases, if you consider the value of the book, I am earning between $15 and $25 per hour – just to write a review on a book I have enjoyed reading. In many cases, the books I review are ones that I would have purchased anyway since I am such a voracious reader.
The Dorrance Team has designed the process so that it is simply a matter of 1, 2, and 3. 1. Select the book. 2. Read and write the review. 3. Notify Dorrance of where online you have submitted your review. The most difficult part of the entire process, for me, is the decision of which book I want to review. I love books of all types and I find myself wandering around the store, first in this section, then in that, trying to narrow down my choices. And Dorrance has a wonderful selection of books and the ones I have read thus far have been very high quality. After that difficult part is finished, however, I then place my order and wait for the book to ship.
The personnel in this very well establish publishing firm are friendly and very responsive when questions do arise. I am very proud to be a member of the Dorrance Book Review Team and plan to continue reading and writing reviews for a long time to come.
